| Washington DC's A Day in Black & White and Navies share this split record to celebrate a tour of the US in March 2005. Both bands were captured on tape by Hugh McElroy of Dischord's Black Eyes in a series of informal sessions conducted at home. The three new songs from A Day in Black & White show a different side of the band than was offered in their Level-Plane debut, "My Heroes..." Here one will find concise songwriting coupled with elements of the avant-garde in the most tasteful of ways. On their side, Navies offer up three tracks of noisy post-punk, which recalls the rhythmic bombasts of the experimental Dutch group The Ex matched with the guitar clutter of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. Dynamic and volatile, their live show is often filled with explosive outbursts that chart a wide range of sonic territory, incorporating dub-heavy bass and feedback interplay with ferocious drumming. |
