O gauge is defined as 1:48 (0.25 inches to the foot). Several of the major manufacturers of modern era O gauge trains are Lionel, MTH, K-Line, Atlas, Williams, and Weaver. Despite a struggling MPC era, O gauge trains have regained popularity in the 1990s and several new manufactures have come on the scene. The beginning of the modern era was marked in 1987 when Detroit real estate developer Richard Kughn purchased the company from General Mills. With this, Lionel’s 5-digit model numbering system also debuted. Kughn sold the company to Wellspring capital in 1995, but still owns a 5% stake. Rock legend Neil Young also owns 20% of the company and has been a driving force in bringing about a lot of the technology enhancements we have today. Scott sold Neil a reconditioned Lionel Z transformer at the TCA York meet many years ago! Today, O scale trains are one of the most popular model railroading scales available.
