HO scale is the most popular scale of model railway in most of the world. The name is derived from the fact that its 1:87 scale is approximately half that of O scale where it derived its name, HO (Half of O). We divide our HO trains between modern as being manufactured from 1970 or so forward and vintage as earlier than that. HO has become the most popular scale due to its relative low cost, great detail, huge variety, and its size make it ideal to make fabulous layout in a relatively small space. Quality and cost run the full gambit from inexpensive starters set that can be bought for under $50 to exquisite brass models of locomotives from great manufacturers like Overland, PFM, Key Imports, Sunset Models, United Models, Westside, and others that can cost into the thousands. In the 1960s, as HO scale began to overtake O scale in popularity, A.C. Gilbert and Lionel also began manufacturing HO trains. Today, modern era HO locomotives, rolling stock, buildings, and scenery are available from a large number of manufacturers in a variety of price brackets. Most HO trains run on 2-rail track and are DC powered. Marklin is the exception and their trains run on a 3-rail AC system, although their center rail is cleverly hidden by a series of round-headed pins in the center of the track between the rails.
